Course IV. Introduction to Naval Artillery and its Historial Meaning



DATOS SOBRE LA ACTIVIDAD

OBJETIVOS:

Two priority objectives:
1.- Guns and naval artillery are one of the archaelogical objects most widely
documented in underwater environment. Through this course we want to raise a
discussion about its problematic, their identification, historical and naval issues,
and its conservation or restoration.

2.- A training course on Naval Artillery will offer to the students the opportunity
to get deeper on this problematic and develop specific abilities on its research.

Preliminary Programme

Monday 12 September

Introduction to Naval Artillery and its Historical meaning.

9h - 9h 30 Welcome to students.

9h 30 - 11h Theoretical course. Historiography: The Origin of artillery and its technological production and regulation. Speaker: Renato Gianni Ridella (Laboratorio di Storia Maritima e Navale - Genova, Italy).

11h – 11h 30 Coffee Break.

11h 30 – 13h Theoretical course. Historiography: War on the sea, application of artillery in naval conflicts. Speaker: Renato Gianni Ridella (Laboratorio di Storia Maritima e Navale - Genova, Italy).

13h - 14h Symposium and presentation of practical cases by students.

Tuesday 13 September

Naval Artillery: XV - XVII Centuries

9h – 10h 30 Theoretical course. Naval Artillery in western Europe during the XV-XVII century. Speaker: Fred Hocker (Director of Research, Vasa Museum, Sweden).

10h 30 – 11h Coffee Break.

11h – 12h 30 Theoretical course. Naval Artillery in western Europe during the XV-XVII century. Its influence in Shipbuilding. Speaker: Fred Hocker (Director of Research, Vasa Museum, Sweden).

12h 30 - 13h Break.

13h - 14h Symposium and presentation of practical cases by students.

Wednesday 14 September

Naval Artillery in XVIII century

9h – 10h 30 Theroretical course. Naval artillery in the preindustrial times. Guns in Europeans fleets. Speaker: Ruth Rhynas Brown (Basiliscoe - Leeds).

10h 30 – 11h Coffee break.

11h – 12h 30 Theroretical course.  The influence of 18th naval artillery on shipbuilding. Iron guns in Europeans fleets. Speaker: Ruth Rhynas Brown (Basiliscoe - Leeds).

12h 30 - 13h Break.

13h - 14h Symposium and presentation of practical cases by students.

Thursday 15 September

Research and conservation of naval artillery

9h – 10h 30 Theoretical course. Conservation and restoration of underwater artillery precedence. Speaker: Luis Carlos Zambrano (Museo de Cadiz, Spain).

10h 30 – 11h Coffee break.

11h – 12h 30 Theoretical course. Methods of research and record systems applied to Naval Artillery. Speaker: Antonio Ramos (University of Cadiz, Spain).

12h 30 - 13h Break.

13h - 14h Symposium and presentation of practical cases by students.

16 h - 19h Activity: Round table with the participation of all the teachers and course participants. Its main aim is to draw conclusions about the state of research in the field of naval artillery and establish priority lines for the coming years.

Friday 16 September

10h - 14h Street guns. Field visit to naval artillery on the streets and walls of Cadiz. Speaker: Alberto Gullón (University of Cadiz, Spain).
